The School Governors' Yearbook 2010 Publisher: Adamson Publishing Price: £8.95 + £1.25 p&p
For several years now I have relied on The School Governors' Yearbook to make sure that I know what my Governing Body should be doing through the year. The Yearbook has short, clear articles about current issues in education, including recent changes to legislation that affect schools. It gives facts, explains the background, and sets out the opportunities and problems which each issue presents for governors.
Among its sections for 2010 are the new inspection system, developments in the 14-19 curriculum, safeguarding, and insurance issues. Of course, the agendas and briefings which our Stockport Governor Services provide keep us in line as to any action which we need to be taking, and decisions which we need to make, but the Yearbook fills in some of the background. It helps governors to see how things fit together, and suggests questions they should be asking to ensure that their schools provide the best opportunities for their pupils.
Do you ever wonder where you can look for further ideas, information or resources? The Yearbook has some really useful directories. Do you ever feel confused about Governing Body responsibilities and procedures? The Yearbook includes helpful summaries. There's even a list translating those everlasting acronyms! Finally, there's a planning framework for the Governing Body year.
