GOVAS News for January 2012 PDF Print E-mail

Welcome to 2012!  GOVAS hopes you have a successful year in your school.  It doesn`t promise to be an easy one, but that is all the more reason for governors to carry out their role effectively.   All governors need to be very clear about what their role is.  If you haven`t looked at it recently, why not begin 2012 by re-visiting Stockport`s Governors` Remits and Responsibilities publication.  You can find it on the Learning Leads website (see below for how to access this site).

As governors we always need to be asking questions.  But these questions need to be well-informed if they are to give us the information we require to ensure that our schools are really operating well.  We also need to be able to understand the answers we are given, to examine the evidence, and to ask further incisive questions about it.

Ofsted school inspections latest

Now that several Stockport schools have been inspected under the new Ofsted framework we can see that there are some changes we really need to take on board.  Firstly, as Phil Beswick, Head of School Improvement said at the recent Education Partnership Board meeting “the bar has definitely been raised.  Phil emphasised that governors have to be aware of the progress which children make in their school and where they are falling behind that appropriate action is taken to improve progress.  We need to be sure that adequate tracking is taking place and that the school is using the data to inform the necessary improvements needed in teaching and learning. Of course, we are not the professionals, but it is our job to ask questions and to support the professionals by challenging them with questions.  There will be more training for governors coming along, so keep your eyes open and make sure that someone from your school takes part.

Another area which Ofsted is targeting is the safeguarding agenda.  Lynn Perry, of the Stockport Safeguarding Children Board, said at the same meeting that Ofsted is looking at how governors monitor the safeguarding situation.  She particularly drew attention to

Knowing your school: RAISEonline for Governors of Primary Schools

The NGA has published the first in a series of briefing notes for school governors produced in association with partners.   The first, written by RM Education, is aimed at helping primary governors’ understanding of RAISEonline, but we will follow this up with a version for secondary school governors. Further briefing notes will follow considering other aspects of school life.

Lord Hill, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Schools, said:  ‘One of the key jobs of the governing body is to hold the head to account for the performance of the school. To fulfil that role, governors need access to reliable information, know how to interpret it, and know the right questions to ask. RAISEonline is a vital source of information and I hope that this useful publication will help you to put it to the best possible use.

‘The Government is committed to publishing more school data and to giving parents more information. I congratulate the National Governors’ Association on producing notes on “Knowing your school” and I welcome this publication on RAISEonline for primary school governors.’

Unlike NGA material for members only, this briefing note can be forwarded to other primary schools, so please do circulate it to governors outside NGA network, and of course suggest they might like to join!

The briefing note can be downloaded from the NGA website – Knowing Your School

How well do you know your school?  The National Governors` Association has produced a useful briefing document to help you to understand the information that RAISEonline gives about your school.  'Knowing your school' gives five key questions that governors should be asking about themsleves, and shows you how to use RAISEonline to help you to be better informed.  This document is particularly for primary governors, though NGA and RME (NGA`s partners in this

publication) are intending to produce a similar guide for secondary governors.
